Rangbaaj: A film on naxalism

Rangbaaj: A film on naxalism

Article by Pooja@nyootv.net

Bhojpuri audiences can look forward to some great entertainment in the form of 'Rangbaaj', an upcoming Bhojpuri film in the backdrop of naxalism. Rangbaaj is produced by Haider Kazmi under the banner of ASC Digital Private Limited. The film is directed by Shivram Yadav who hails from Deoria. The film has Haider Kazmi, Rani Chatterjee, Anil Yadav and Seema Singh as its lead cast.

Shivram Yadav has earlier worked with Haider Kazmi in a Bollywood project titled 'Path' which was based on crime. Kazmi makes his debut in Bhojpuri films with Rangbaaj. Kazmi's character in Rangbaaj is quite similar to his own life. Kazmi has spend his early years in Jehanabad which infested with naxals and in Rangbaaj he plays a Jehanabad bully. Actress Rani Chatterjee who plays the female lead in the film and Kazmi say that though Rangbaaj is an action packed thriller, it has emotion and entertainment in the right doses which are important for a film to succeed. The director of the film, Shivram Yadav is very happy with how the film has shaped up and says that the Bhojpuri film industry is being gifted with a talented actor like, Haider Kazmi who has shared a great on-screen chemistry with Rani Chatterjee.

Rangbaaj has nine songs, of which one is an item number, "Lach lach lachke tohari kamariya" which is already a raging chartbuster. Inspite of a serious backdrop, the film has songs to cater to the needs of the Bhojpuri audience. At the music launch of the film, Haider Kazmi said, "I want the people to enjoy the film with a light dose of entertainment even as they watch a social issue-based film. People want to see such films but it is important how you present it to them. I know serious films have hardly any songs but one must not forget that we are dealing with the Bhojpuri audience here. So it was important to add this flavor. The motive behind having nine songs in the film is that people should not be bored. The issue of Naxalism is very vast. It is not possible for everyone to understand its meaning. How many people are aware about the genesis of Naxalism and the reason behind it? I am sure very few people are aware about Charu Mazumdar, the man who started the movement at Naxalbari in Bengal. My aim is to convey the message to the people in an easy format." Vouching for the entertainment factor as pointed out by Kazmi, actress Seema Singh said: "Item numbers are essential in Bhojpuri films. But the audience should take these as entertainment and not in any other sense. After all, we are artistes and we are doing it because there is a demand."

Anil Yadav who has a negative track in the film, said: "The essence of Bhojpuri films can never go from Bollywood. This is the reason many of their films have Bhojpuri dialogues. We want the state government's support as most Bhojpuri films are shot outside Bihar. These states generate good revenue out of it."
So watch out for 'Rangbaaj' at theatres near you, soon!

Observe And Report Film Review

Ronnie Barnhardt works as the top security guard n a big shopping mall and he likes his job but fells he could be doing more. He gets called upon when a flasher strikes at the mall and upsets the shoppers. One distraught worker is Brandi, who Ronnie really likes and thinks he has a chance with, he helps when she gets flashed at and vows to find the flasher and take him down.

Ronnie has to work hard with his team of security officers but they are finding their job hard since the police have been called in and Ronnie has taken an instant dislike to the police officer in charge. He seeks advise from Nell who works in the coffee shop and she advises him to pursue his dreams, this leads Ronnie to apply to be a police officer.

Will Ronnie make it as a police officer and win over Brand and can he bring the flasher down?

Do not think that this film is basic as I have only given the briefest of plot outlines for this film as I don't wish to spoil it for those who may not have seen it yet as it really is a good move with a fun storyline. I did find he storyline interesting and quite funny, there were unfortunately no twists in the story and it was quite predictable but it was still entertaining and a joy to watch. The acting was also very good for nearly all involved which helped.

The lead role of Ronnie was played by Seth Rogen and I thought he did a great job, his character was good and I did fell like I got to know a good amount about him and so was able to warm to him and like him a lot. I could understand why he felt frustrated in is work and his dreams of being a police officer. He came across as genuine but a little dumb at times when it came to women and this made him even more likable and at times made me feel sorry for him. I found there to be a good chemistry between him and the role of Nell, played by Collette Wolfe. She too was a good character but I think I would have liked to have seen slightly more of her and got to know more about her background to understand her a little better.

We did have a good amount of supporting actors and some included, Ray Liotta, Anna Faris, John Yuan and Matt Yuan. They were all very good and bought a lot of humour to the film. One of the roles which I did not like was that of Brandi, played by Anna Faris, I just felt she was too stuck up and used people and I thought she was too over the top for the film. The other characters were good and did bring some much needed depth to the film.

The majority of the film was set inside the shopping mall and it all looked good and authentic. The sets and props were all well made and produced and so to were the costumes. They all blended in with the film very well. There were a few special effects in the film and these were also very good and believable, at times we did get an action scene which was slightly over the top but this just added to the humour of the scene in which it was used.

This film is a comedy and we did have a few good laugh out loud moments, these mainly came from Ronnie and when he was with his fellow security officers, there was a good chemistry between them all and they bounced off each other extremely well. There were a few times when things went slightly too daft and this did put me off slightly. Some of the character seemed to think daft is what was meant by comedy and this did not go down well with either me or hubby. I think the slight serious nature of the film, the scenes with Ronnie and his Mom worked well in this film as it made it more realistic with the serious element and I felt this was handled well.

The music was good and modern and I felt it worked well in the film and helped with the telling of the story and the comedy elements.

The DVD which I have does have a gag reel included but this is the only extra feature. It is quite funny but I would not go out of my way to pay extra just to watch this. The running time of the film is only 83 minutes and found this was a suitable length with the story moving at a good pace from start to finish. The rate is a 15 as there are some scenes of violence, drugs and nudity and I have to agree with this. I paid just £3 for the DVD and felt this was a fair price.

I would love to be able to give this film more than 3 stars as it has a good storyline and some very good acting, Seth Rogen was excellent and I loved his character. It is very funny at times but for me there was slightly too much daftness and it reminded me a lot of Paul Blart Mall Cop. It is very much worth a watch if you can get it for a great price or manage to catch it on the TV.

Food For Thought For Sierra Leone Film Makers

Food For Thought For Sierra Leone Film Makers

At a time when the Sierra Leone movie industry is taking a new dimension and slowly making some fair output, it would be interesting to know that like any other aspect of life there is always a source for inspiration.

At the start of the renewed filmmaking era about four years ago, movie production enthusiasts like the Late Abu Noah and Julius Spencer of Premier Media went to Nigeria to find motivation. They brought home top Nigerian producers, engineers, actresses and actors. To the surprise of Sierra Leonean Nollywood film lovers, they were able to see their favorite stars on home soil. And on the movie front, they provided much needed inspiration and helped both Abu Noah (late) and Julius Spencer to produce Bai Bureh Goes To War and Blood Diamonds, respectively. Though both films were not successful on the market they were seen as good starters. Sierra Leonean actors and producers worked successfully alongside their Nigerian counterparts in both films- there were now talks of Sollywood for Sierra Leone (replicating Nollywood- the Nigerian film industry acronym).

Nonetheless, it is interesting to note that if Sierra Leone's movie industry is to take a genuine drive towards excellence it will be important for movie producers to try to be creative, taking cognizance of home made innovations in film production. In other words we must look at the Nigerian film, take some examples from them and evolve a different method of film production of our won. But we must not tend to replicate them in exact manner; if that is the case then there is the possibility of our film industry not reaching the intended height and success all those in the growing industry hope for.

]]>

Nollywood film lovers were astounded at the absence of Nigerian films from the big screen at Africa's biggest and most renowned film festival in Burkina Faso in 2007, FESPACO. Ezra was the only Nigerian film shown at Fespaco and its director, Newton Aduaka, is actually based in France, where he does his film business.

Notwithstanding the fact that Nigerian film-makers have been quick to criticize the absence of their films in Africa's most elite film festival, organizers deny any wrongdoing and say Nollywood movies do not meet their standards for the feature film category. FESPACO executive, Baba Hamma said: "Our festival is for motion picture. That means you have to bring films on 35mm and Nollywood usually makes movies on a video tape."

He went on: "But I do not think it is Nollywood's objective to come to our festivals."

Organisers at FESPACO received 500 movies but only 200 were shown in the festival theatres, and only one was Nigerian. Other critics have also point out that Nigerian films are most often straight and predictable stories mostly imitating Hollywood versions, deviating from African themes.

Abubakarr Sanogu, a Nigeria art student from Los Angeles, even agreed that Nollywood films have not had the space they deserve at FESPACO, but admits they need to be improved.

This is a warming to movie producers in Sierra Leone that imitating Nigerian films would be counterproductive and would actually have a negative impact in the growth of the film industry locally. If you look at some of the recent production ranging from Mysterious Death produced by Daniel Moseray Jnr and Street Life produced by Sahr Issa, you would notice that there are clear manifestations of Nollywood influence in them. If our film industry is to improve, local producers have to be imaginative and creative, adopting Sierra Leonean themes in order to create a breakthrough.
