Rangbaaj: A film on naxalism

Rangbaaj: A film on naxalism

Article by Pooja@nyootv.net

Bhojpuri audiences can look forward to some great entertainment in the form of 'Rangbaaj', an upcoming Bhojpuri film in the backdrop of naxalism. Rangbaaj is produced by Haider Kazmi under the banner of ASC Digital Private Limited. The film is directed by Shivram Yadav who hails from Deoria. The film has Haider Kazmi, Rani Chatterjee, Anil Yadav and Seema Singh as its lead cast.

Shivram Yadav has earlier worked with Haider Kazmi in a Bollywood project titled 'Path' which was based on crime. Kazmi makes his debut in Bhojpuri films with Rangbaaj. Kazmi's character in Rangbaaj is quite similar to his own life. Kazmi has spend his early years in Jehanabad which infested with naxals and in Rangbaaj he plays a Jehanabad bully. Actress Rani Chatterjee who plays the female lead in the film and Kazmi say that though Rangbaaj is an action packed thriller, it has emotion and entertainment in the right doses which are important for a film to succeed. The director of the film, Shivram Yadav is very happy with how the film has shaped up and says that the Bhojpuri film industry is being gifted with a talented actor like, Haider Kazmi who has shared a great on-screen chemistry with Rani Chatterjee.

Rangbaaj has nine songs, of which one is an item number, "Lach lach lachke tohari kamariya" which is already a raging chartbuster. Inspite of a serious backdrop, the film has songs to cater to the needs of the Bhojpuri audience. At the music launch of the film, Haider Kazmi said, "I want the people to enjoy the film with a light dose of entertainment even as they watch a social issue-based film. People want to see such films but it is important how you present it to them. I know serious films have hardly any songs but one must not forget that we are dealing with the Bhojpuri audience here. So it was important to add this flavor. The motive behind having nine songs in the film is that people should not be bored. The issue of Naxalism is very vast. It is not possible for everyone to understand its meaning. How many people are aware about the genesis of Naxalism and the reason behind it? I am sure very few people are aware about Charu Mazumdar, the man who started the movement at Naxalbari in Bengal. My aim is to convey the message to the people in an easy format." Vouching for the entertainment factor as pointed out by Kazmi, actress Seema Singh said: "Item numbers are essential in Bhojpuri films. But the audience should take these as entertainment and not in any other sense. After all, we are artistes and we are doing it because there is a demand."

Anil Yadav who has a negative track in the film, said: "The essence of Bhojpuri films can never go from Bollywood. This is the reason many of their films have Bhojpuri dialogues. We want the state government's support as most Bhojpuri films are shot outside Bihar. These states generate good revenue out of it."
So watch out for 'Rangbaaj' at theatres near you, soon!

Observe And Report Film Review

Ronnie Barnhardt works as the top security guard n a big shopping mall and he likes his job but fells he could be doing more. He gets called upon when a flasher strikes at the mall and upsets the shoppers. One distraught worker is Brandi, who Ronnie really likes and thinks he has a chance with, he helps when she gets flashed at and vows to find the flasher and take him down.

Ronnie has to work hard with his team of security officers but they are finding their job hard since the police have been called in and Ronnie has taken an instant dislike to the police officer in charge. He seeks advise from Nell who works in the coffee shop and she advises him to pursue his dreams, this leads Ronnie to apply to be a police officer.

Will Ronnie make it as a police officer and win over Brand and can he bring the flasher down?

Do not think that this film is basic as I have only given the briefest of plot outlines for this film as I don't wish to spoil it for those who may not have seen it yet as it really is a good move with a fun storyline. I did find he storyline interesting and quite funny, there were unfortunately no twists in the story and it was quite predictable but it was still entertaining and a joy to watch. The acting was also very good for nearly all involved which helped.

The lead role of Ronnie was played by Seth Rogen and I thought he did a great job, his character was good and I did fell like I got to know a good amount about him and so was able to warm to him and like him a lot. I could understand why he felt frustrated in is work and his dreams of being a police officer. He came across as genuine but a little dumb at times when it came to women and this made him even more likable and at times made me feel sorry for him. I found there to be a good chemistry between him and the role of Nell, played by Collette Wolfe. She too was a good character but I think I would have liked to have seen slightly more of her and got to know more about her background to understand her a little better.

We did have a good amount of supporting actors and some included, Ray Liotta, Anna Faris, John Yuan and Matt Yuan. They were all very good and bought a lot of humour to the film. One of the roles which I did not like was that of Brandi, played by Anna Faris, I just felt she was too stuck up and used people and I thought she was too over the top for the film. The other characters were good and did bring some much needed depth to the film.

The majority of the film was set inside the shopping mall and it all looked good and authentic. The sets and props were all well made and produced and so to were the costumes. They all blended in with the film very well. There were a few special effects in the film and these were also very good and believable, at times we did get an action scene which was slightly over the top but this just added to the humour of the scene in which it was used.

This film is a comedy and we did have a few good laugh out loud moments, these mainly came from Ronnie and when he was with his fellow security officers, there was a good chemistry between them all and they bounced off each other extremely well. There were a few times when things went slightly too daft and this did put me off slightly. Some of the character seemed to think daft is what was meant by comedy and this did not go down well with either me or hubby. I think the slight serious nature of the film, the scenes with Ronnie and his Mom worked well in this film as it made it more realistic with the serious element and I felt this was handled well.

The music was good and modern and I felt it worked well in the film and helped with the telling of the story and the comedy elements.

The DVD which I have does have a gag reel included but this is the only extra feature. It is quite funny but I would not go out of my way to pay extra just to watch this. The running time of the film is only 83 minutes and found this was a suitable length with the story moving at a good pace from start to finish. The rate is a 15 as there are some scenes of violence, drugs and nudity and I have to agree with this. I paid just £3 for the DVD and felt this was a fair price.

I would love to be able to give this film more than 3 stars as it has a good storyline and some very good acting, Seth Rogen was excellent and I loved his character. It is very funny at times but for me there was slightly too much daftness and it reminded me a lot of Paul Blart Mall Cop. It is very much worth a watch if you can get it for a great price or manage to catch it on the TV.

Food For Thought For Sierra Leone Film Makers

Food For Thought For Sierra Leone Film Makers

At a time when the Sierra Leone movie industry is taking a new dimension and slowly making some fair output, it would be interesting to know that like any other aspect of life there is always a source for inspiration.

At the start of the renewed filmmaking era about four years ago, movie production enthusiasts like the Late Abu Noah and Julius Spencer of Premier Media went to Nigeria to find motivation. They brought home top Nigerian producers, engineers, actresses and actors. To the surprise of Sierra Leonean Nollywood film lovers, they were able to see their favorite stars on home soil. And on the movie front, they provided much needed inspiration and helped both Abu Noah (late) and Julius Spencer to produce Bai Bureh Goes To War and Blood Diamonds, respectively. Though both films were not successful on the market they were seen as good starters. Sierra Leonean actors and producers worked successfully alongside their Nigerian counterparts in both films- there were now talks of Sollywood for Sierra Leone (replicating Nollywood- the Nigerian film industry acronym).

Nonetheless, it is interesting to note that if Sierra Leone's movie industry is to take a genuine drive towards excellence it will be important for movie producers to try to be creative, taking cognizance of home made innovations in film production. In other words we must look at the Nigerian film, take some examples from them and evolve a different method of film production of our won. But we must not tend to replicate them in exact manner; if that is the case then there is the possibility of our film industry not reaching the intended height and success all those in the growing industry hope for.

]]>

Nollywood film lovers were astounded at the absence of Nigerian films from the big screen at Africa's biggest and most renowned film festival in Burkina Faso in 2007, FESPACO. Ezra was the only Nigerian film shown at Fespaco and its director, Newton Aduaka, is actually based in France, where he does his film business.

Notwithstanding the fact that Nigerian film-makers have been quick to criticize the absence of their films in Africa's most elite film festival, organizers deny any wrongdoing and say Nollywood movies do not meet their standards for the feature film category. FESPACO executive, Baba Hamma said: "Our festival is for motion picture. That means you have to bring films on 35mm and Nollywood usually makes movies on a video tape."

He went on: "But I do not think it is Nollywood's objective to come to our festivals."

Organisers at FESPACO received 500 movies but only 200 were shown in the festival theatres, and only one was Nigerian. Other critics have also point out that Nigerian films are most often straight and predictable stories mostly imitating Hollywood versions, deviating from African themes.

Abubakarr Sanogu, a Nigeria art student from Los Angeles, even agreed that Nollywood films have not had the space they deserve at FESPACO, but admits they need to be improved.

This is a warming to movie producers in Sierra Leone that imitating Nigerian films would be counterproductive and would actually have a negative impact in the growth of the film industry locally. If you look at some of the recent production ranging from Mysterious Death produced by Daniel Moseray Jnr and Street Life produced by Sahr Issa, you would notice that there are clear manifestations of Nollywood influence in them. If our film industry is to improve, local producers have to be imaginative and creative, adopting Sierra Leonean themes in order to create a breakthrough.

In-film advertising, a profitable option

In-film advertising, a profitable option

WITH THE advent of the new millennium, the marketers and advertisers have found a new form of publicising their product and creating more visibility for their brands. This is cinema or films. The growing competition between products and brands in the Indian market has led the marketers to find more ways of reaching the customers and Indian cinema has become not only an innovative but also, an effective option.
Due to the rise in the clutter of multitudinous brands, people have shortened attention spans. Here, in-film advertising is a boon, as it breaks through this clutter. In fact, the best way to deliver the message is to catch the customer off-guard, when their rational defences are down. The best way to do so, is to use the emotional gate rather than the rational gate. The rational gate scrutinises the advantages, benefits, features and seeks value for money; the emotional gate is all about trust, love, identification and belief and in India, the films operate at the emotional level of an individual.

However, films are a different medium and one bad placement can do more damage than 10 good placements. Artistic integrity is crucial for successful brand placements and the utility of the product has to be woven properly into the script. The placement should be a natural fit and shouldn't be unnatural.

Depending on the content of the film and its story line, a sketch of the profile of expected viewers of the film can be prepared and then those brands could be approached that could appeal to the targeted viewers. This will then be followed by a 360 degrees marketing plan, for cross-promotions during the various stages of a film's release. Apart form publicity, a major monetary benefit is involved in an in-film advertising.

]]>
One of the best examples is that of the recent film "Fashion" which had six prestigious brand placements - clothing brands Kimaya and Reebok, Lenovo laptop, Sunsilk shampoo, Cellucom and LG Electronics. The production team earned Rs 8.5 crores from in-film advertisement alone, out of its total investment of 22 crores.

Advertising agencies have realised that product placements in films with film industry's stars, bring the brands instant visibility and it is much cheaper than hiring individual stars to endorse them. The Van Huesen Ghajini collection is a great example for the same. The way Van Huesen advertisements promoted Ghajini, not only benefited the brand but, the personal image of Aamir Khan enhanced the trust for the brand. In the film, Aamir's character was of a business tycoon, which added to the brand Van Huesen, depicting success.

The strategy of placing some selected brands in films, gives them an additional marketing push, even though the stars featuring them may not be directly endorsing these brands.

There are other advantages of in-film advertising. One gets stars to represent their brands, at a fraction of the costs. Moreover, films transcend geography, class and culture barriers, giving an opportunity for national and even international level branding. It also facilitates a clutter-free environment. Most importantly, films cannot be surfed, zipped or muted, unlike TV and internet. The advertisement catches people in a receptive mood and can be target specific.

Another example of weaving the product with the script was seen in the film Ghajini. Here, an unsaid competitive branding was carried out by BMW, the high end car manufacturer against its rival Mercedes. This was done by placing a BMW car ahead of three other Mercedes car in the film. Aamir Khan's character rides in the car, while his employees ride in the Mercedes cars behind him.

Earlier attempts at such advertising include, Subhash Ghai's film Yaadein, which gave screen space to brands like the mouth freshener Paas Paas and Coca-Cola. Amitabh Bachchan's Virrudh similarly showcased Nerolac Paints and Western Union Money Transfer.

Hritik Roshan's Koi Mil Gaya and its sequel Krrish similarly had product placements of Eros Jewellery, Avon Cycle and Bournvita. John Abraham's Goal showed a lot of Reebok merchandise and a Chevrolet car showed up in Saif Ali Khan's Ta Ra Rum Pum. Akshay Kumar's back to the roots tearjerker Namaste London had Spykar denims while, Maybelline's cosmetics were in focus for Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om.

In film advertising has not only gripped the Indian cinema but even Hollywood has leveraged brands such as BMW, Jaguar, Ford, Ray Ban eyewear, Starbucks coffee, AOL, AT&T etc. Thus, the high cost of conventional media, accompanied by the growing clutter, has made in-film advertising an exciting and viable opportunity for advertiser.

The First Horror Film

The First Horror Film

Article by Samantha Bennett

Horror movies are famous all over the world for their essence of thrill, shock and suspense. It is violent, and enjoyment of them depends on an enjoyment of violence and is. All of the Characters from horror movies are important, but the BEST HEROES have a special place in our hearts.

Horror

In horror film plots, evil forces, events, or characters, sometimes of supernatural origin, intrude into the everyday world. Early horror films often drew inspiration from characters and stories from classic literature, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Later horror films, in contrast, often drew inspiration from the insecurities of life since World War Two, giving rise to the three distinct, but related subgenres of the horror-of-personality film, the horror-of-Armageddon film, and the horror-of-the-demonic film. The last subgenre may be seen as a modernized transition from the earlier horror films, expanding on the earlier emphasis on supernatural agents that bring horror to the world. Nonetheless, some major studios and respected directors have made forays into the genre, and more serious critics have analyzed horror films through the prisms of genre theory and the auteur theory. Some horror films incorporate elements of other genres such as science fiction, fantasy, black comedy, and thrillers. The horror genre is nearly as old as film itself. The first depictions of supernatural events appear in several of the silent shorts created by film pioneers such as Georges M

The Tooth Fairy Film Review

The Tooth Fairy Film Review

FILM ONLY REVIEW

The Tooth fairy is a minor league ice hockey player, he has this nickname due to the fact he is good at knocking players teeth out. He has a girlfriend who has two children and despite getting on well with the daughter he is struggling to get on with the son.

His life is about to change drastically though when he drops out to the little girl that the tooth fairy is not real and finds himself being whisked away to a magical kingdom. The tooth fairy is given a punishment of serving one week as a real life tooth fairy for what he said to the little girl and he is shocked by this. The following morning he wakes in bed and thinks it was a dream. Unfortunately he soon discovers it was not a dream when his co worker turns up with his first job.

Can The Tooth fairy cut it as a real tooth fairy and will he finally remember his own dreams and not take others away from them?

I was not overly interested in this film but when I saw more of the trailers it looked quite fun and enjoyable. After sitting down for an evening and wanting something light to watch both me and hubby agreed on this film and I am quite glad we did as we both found it to be enjoyable. The story was good but very far fetched at times but I think it was a good balance for children and young viewers. There is enough in the story to make it appeal to children but it was lacking for the elder viewer. I did think it was also quite daft at times but the way some of the actors carried their characters it made it worth watching and overall if you want a light easy to watch film then you could not go wrong with this one.

The acting was pretty good from all involved. The lead role of the tooth fairy was played by Dwayne Johnson and he did a good job. I would not have personally placed him in the role but after watching how he developed his character he actually was quite good and I think the way he looked so huge and out of place added to the humour of the film. He managed to convince me of his character and did deliver his lines with ease. He looked good when playing hockey and suited the costumes but I felt the tooth fairy costume was a little feminine on him and he did look daft. He bought some humour to the film but I thought he could have bought slightly more. He worked well with all involved and I did enjoy the connection between him and the daughter.

Some of the support character I felt were strong than the lead. Julie Andrews had the small part of being in charge of the fairies and I felt she deserved more on screen time as she was a great addition. She showed strength and was not afraid at the size of the Tooth fairy. I also enjoyed the addition of Darien Provost as Gabe and felt he too bought a good fun character to the film. We had a lot of other good support actors who helped bring a good mix of characters.

The two different world in this film blended well. I loved the real world and how it was shown, the setting was the present day and then I loved how different is was in Tooth fairy land and how bright and magical it came across. I felt that when they mixed it was done in a very good way and the use of the bright colours made it easy to spot who was from where. I felt the special effects which were used were good but some of them could have been slightly more detailed and with a little more work would not have looked too out of place. I noticed a few badly added backdrops throughout the film but as this is mainly for the children I don't think they will notice them. I felt that some of the hockey scenes were slightly too rough and I did wince a few times when people were being banged and hurt but I again think children will actually enjoy seeing this element of the film. The music for me was not at all memorable and I cannot remember a single track which was used. I do remember that we had some good chants when we were watching the hockey but this is all I can remember of the soundtrack.

The film has a running time of 101 minutes and personally I found this to be a little too long as the story seemed quite slow paced. The rate is a PG and I do agree with this and think viewers around the 7 year old mark will find this a good fun film. This is a film only review so there are no bonus features to speak about but the DVD is available for around the £5 mark but personally I would recommend waiting for this to come on the TV and watch it for free.

I am going to give this film 3 stars. Both me and hubby did enjoy it but felt there was a lack of adult humour for the parents who are watching with their children. It is an easy to watch film which is very predictable but I think children will thoroughly love it and find it very funny. Maybe with a few stronger effects and more humour I would have given it 4 stars. One to watch but maybe wait for it to come on the TV.

Window Film

Window Film

Article by Paul Foster

Glazing causes many problems to overcome. Glass causes problems in homes, conservatories and offices especially when montiors or TVs are being viewed as they as the suns heat can be stiffling, the glare can make seeing a monitor screen virtualy impossible and it also fades carpets, furnishings and displays very quickly (remember when youve moved home and picked up a cabinet which hadnt been moved for years, you can then see the different colour of the carpet...the colour your carpet used to be before it started to fade!). They are also a vunerable spot in any home or office and a weak point from intruders, they are also a danger to anyone inside as a flying shard of glass from a broken window can cause sever injury and even deathAnother problem with glazing can be the fast that it is clear meanin others can see straight into your house. If your house is close to a road or path this can be quite annoying, also areas like toilets and store rooms should be cut off from view from passers by.

How can you solve these problems...

Window Film is the solution to many problems associated with glazing but it is still a product that not many people know about.

Solar Control Window Film

These solar control films can reduce solar heat by as much as 78%, solar glare by up to 91% and UV (the main cause of fading furniture) by over 98%. The solar control films are available in various shades and colours. The lightest film available is visibly clear to the eye, whilst it doesn't stop hardly and heat or glare it does stop nearly 100% of the UV rays which really helps to reduce the effects of fading on your furnishings. There is a number of natural solar control films which are available in various shades. The best films for heat and glare reduction is a reflective window film, these also have the added benefit of giving day time privacy by giving a one way mirrored effect when someone looks into the property but allowing perfect vision to the outside. All these films are ideal for homes offices and especially conservatories. There is even a special solar control film called Coolkote on the market which is designed especially to be applied to a polycarbonate conservatory roof.

Privacy Window Films

Privacy films are available in various colours and designs, they are made to create various amounts of privacy. Totally opaque window film is available in black or white and stops 100% of the light and vision, similar to that found in a photographic dark room. Frosted window films are the most popular as they stop people seeing in whilst still allowing a lot of natural light to pass through. There are many variations of the frosted film that involve blocks and stripes helping to minimise vision whilst not totally blocking it.

Glass protection window films

These films help to stop glass from shattering under impact. It is available in various thicknesses. The 100 micron film is designed to bring glass to safety standards (BS6206 Class B) so that if someone falls into it it will hold all the harmful shards in place. 175 micron security film is tougher and as well as offering low level security in the event of a bomb blast also offers excellent security benefits against intruders - being thicker than the safety film means it can withstand a more repeated attack, the types you get when someone is trying to break into your house. The thickest film is 300 microns. This film offers high level protection against bomb blast devastation. It is desinged to hold all the harmful shards in place in the event of a bomb going off or a natural disaster such as a hurricane or strong wind. All these films are completely clear to the eye so the only time you will notice them is when they are put to the test.

All in all, if you have a problem with the glazing in your home or office I'm sure there is a Window Film on the market that will solve the problem.

Promotional Tools Used In Film Marketing

Promotional Tools Used In Film Marketing

Article by Art Gib

The Hollywood film industry is one of the biggest moneymakers in the world. Every year big time film studios create films with massive budgets in order to draw the masses to the theater with the hope that the film will become a weekend blockbuster. Billions of dollars are spent every year on the production of films in Hollywood.

And billions of dollars are made every year as well. Driving this money making machine is film promotion. Without proper film promotion, a film can expect lackluster results at the box office. In order to promote a film, film studios come up with massive marketing campaigns.

These campaigns are aimed to garner the interest of the film's target audience and get them to spend money on a ticket to see the movie at the theater. Since a big part of a film's success is judged on how well it does at the box office during its opening weekend, much of a film's marketing strategy is focused on getting people to the theater during this weekend. To accomplish that goal, a film studio will target several means of promotion.

Theaters are a great place for film promotion. What better place to promote your movie than to people who enjoy watching them? Anyone who has gone to a movie is accustomed to sitting through several minutes of trailers before the feature film starts. Also, movie posters and multi-media displays help alert moviegoers of upcoming films in the hope that it will attract them to the theater on opening night.

The internet is another huge marketing tool. Although official movie websites can be helpful, it is viral marketing campaigns that are the most effective tool on the internet. A viral campaign aims to spread the news of the upcoming film quickly through social networking sites, blogs, or forums that are already in place. Through these bloggers, well-placed ads, movie clips, and media writers, attention to a film can spread rapidly on the internet.

Merchandising is another effective promotional tool. Many film studios partner with fast food chains to create themed advertising at the chain to promote the upcoming film. Toys included in kids' meals, themed cups, or packaging can help spread the word. Themed clothing, accessories, and electronics are also popular. A film may also partner with a brand in order to mutually benefit both companies through product placement and advertising. By using all of these tools and many more, film studios spend millions of dollars to promote a film in order to ensure that all of the hard work and expense that went into making the film will pay off on opening weekend.

Windows Self-Adhesive Films

Windows Self-Adhesive Films

Article by Home DIY

Originally developed as automative solar protection film, adhesive free window films are innovative, engineered films that is now employed in homes. They are created using multilayer nanotechnology, a technology that is currently used to create flat panel LCD TV.

Window films consists of glued lamination of polyester and metalised coatings. They are extremely useful and have the ability to filter out infrared and ultraviolet ray and heat. Window films are usually installed on the interior of glass windows, doors and skylights. All you need to do is to shop for the latest window films. Even though they block off heat and sometimes obscure views, natural light can still penetrate the films.

All window films are produced using highly complicated industrial process. From the base material to the completed product, window films undergo massive testing and quality control procedures. This ensure that all finished product meets every single important quality elements. This ensure that all finished product is of the highest quality.

Many owners usually use
self-adhesive glass films
as a retroffiting alternative to overcome problems related to heat, glare and other problems. Many of the product in the market blocked off light when they are used to block off heat. The results would be a dark room that is pretty dim in appearance. Such film contains visible transmittance value much lower than the heat gain value, that most users were looking for.

Worse still, you have to turn on electrical lights to read because light from outside have been completely blocked off or where window film do not block off heat from the outside. These types of films in the form of window tinting is still available. You should try to avoid buying these types of window films. The most recent development in window film technology enable direct filtering of heat from the solar spectrum by absorbing it. The problem with these type of film is that they will conduct the heat to the glass or window panes making the entire house even hotter. This totally defeat the purpose of installing window films.

Many owners install window film mainly to improve the performance of air conditioning and offer some form of protection to glass windows. They also improve the aesthetic of the windows when viewed from the outside. Solar control window film will minimise glare in addition to cutting out heat. There is also films known as security film that offers protection and make it harder for the glass to break. You can also find those that offer both security function and filter out heat at the same time.

You should install window films for your home as they not only adds security but they also protect furnishings, curtains and other upholstery from fading. On top of that, they:

Reduce up to 99% of the sun's harmful uv rays.
Reduce excessive heat gain through your windows.
Supply increased comfort and energy savings. Avert injury from glass fragments due to crime,.
Cut up to 97% of the infrared rays which is the main energy supply that makes you are feeling hot. Provide fade security for your furniture, drapes, rugs and more.

Note that some adhesive free window films may not be used in confined units, even though they may be some available in the market. Some window manufacturers will void their window warrantees if window film is installed on them.

Are you a budding Hitchcock or a wannabe Spielberg but have never had the money to make your very own film? Well, now there is no excuse as it has never been easier to grab a camera and create your very own Oscar worthy cinematic masterpiece. Films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity have shown just how easy it is to create a fantastic low budget movie that can be a huge global success in its own right. So, if you're a budding filmmaker, or just a newbie filming enthusiast, there are a few simple tips you can follow to make sure you get the most professional looking work out of your low cost equipment.

Getting the right equipment together for your film shoot can be not only tricky, but expensive too. However, if you are looking to use the same state of the art camera and lights that they use in Hollywood, but you're looking for a more authentic, low key look for your film there are plenty of low budget cameras available on the market that can do the job well.

When you're shooting your film always remember that the narrative and acting are two of the most important things to get right if you want to make a good impression. You can be forgiven for the quality of your shots if the story is well told and you have good enough actors to pull it off.

Once you've got all the shots you want in the can, it's time to edit together your film and add those finishing touches to complete your movie. Things like transitions, a title sequence and music can all be added at this stage, and you can also move around scenes to make sure you get your masterpiece just the way you want it. If you really want to give your film the professional edge add some credits to the end and make up an official film company logo which you can reuse again and again on your work.

Most new computers will have some sort of in built film editing software for you to use but if you really want to splash out you can opt to buy a specific editing programme so you can give your movies the professional touch. With these programmes you can add colour to your film and you will find a greater range of cutting and editing tools than a run of the mill programmes you can get for free.

Whether you are shooting your film on a small hd camcorder or you are taking out a loan to hire some top class equipment, creating a film you can be proud of takes determination, skill and a lot of creativity, no matter what kind of tools you are using. So if you are keen to put your film skills to good use, grab a low budget camera and get shooting, and you could be collecting that Bafta in no time.

Film Review - Bruno (2009)

Film Review - Bruno (2009)

BOTTOM LINE: Despite being more evenly handled as a film, and still very funny, "Bruno" is not as successfully funny as "Borat", and the way sequences are edited makes the proceedings feel more staged than what they actually are.

THE GOOD: Sacha Baron Cohen is at it again, this time with Bruno, a gay Austrian fashionista who wants to become super-famous. As with "Borat", Cohen unleashes this offensive stereotype on Americans who do not know any better, and quite often comes up with hilarious results. For example, Bruno wants to do a fashion shoot for himself with kids and his interviews with the mothers have to rank as downright embarrassing for those mothers as they basically agree for their babies to do anything he suggests. Bruno's attempt to become straight is hilariously realised when he visits a "gay converter", someone who specialises in turning gay people straight.

This God-fearing individual is prime fodder for Bruno, as is the obligatory "make fun of a crowd of red-necks scene" when he manages to turn a staged fight in a boxing ring in to a love-making session with his assistant. This last scene is so funny, particularly with the reactions of the red-necks, that Cohen could have made the whole film about it. As a piece, the film is better constructed and evenly-handled than "Borat", from the hilarious title sequence to the scripted sequences which link all the improvised sequences together. "Bruno" is a very funny film which manages to push the boundaries of comedy and the genre of the mockumentary in general.

THE BAD: Despite its very funny sequences, "Bruno" is not as funny as say the first half of "Borat", largely because the title character is not as funny in concept. Borat was an ignorant, dumb and innocent immigrant, whereas Bruno can be classed in the more arrogant, stuck-up and not-classy category. When Borat insulted people, he looked like he did not mean it. When Bruno insults people, you get the sense that he is in on it. This leads to another problem with the film; despite all of its improvised sequences which are quite obvious, the way the film is put together gives you the feeling that a lot of these scenes could have been staged even though they are not. The swingers party sequence for example feels half real (when Bruno is arguing with one of the men) and half staged (when Bruno is being assaulted by an aggressive female swinger in the bedroom). The talk show sequence feels completely staged. As a result, "Bruno" does not have that raw energy that helped make "Borat" such a success, even though "Bruno" is likely to be just as financially successful as "Borat".

3 Biggest Film School Myths

3 Biggest Film School Myths

American Film Schools cost anywhere from ,000 to ,000 a year. When famous alum like George Lucas and Martin Scorsese went, the industry was very different, and their programs did not cost even a fraction of this amount. As a graduate of NYU Film, I learned the hard way of the gross disconnect between what is taught there, and how little it prepares a graduate for either working in the industry or making feature films. With tuition that astronomically high, I want to help dispel 3 of the biggest myths about film school that most people still believe in until they attend and graduate.

Myth #1: Film schools have clout in the film industry. This is not Business School. Going to Harvard may get you a cushy job at Goldman Sachs. In the film industry, everybody works their way up from the bottom. Period. It does not matter if you went to NYU or USC. I recommend calling the Comar Agency. (I am unaffiliated with them). They are a staffing agency specializing in the Entertainment Industry. Call and ask them if a film degree makes you any better a candidate for a job than someone without that degree. And if not, then why not apply for a film job right now?

Myth #2: You need a film school to teach you how to make films. This weekend I checked out two movie shoots. One was a student film being shot at New York Film Academy. Here, each student is paying ,000 a year in tuition to shoot on a ,000 camera. Meanwhile, my friends Glynn and Frida shot their own 10 minute short by teaching themselves and spending time on film sets. They spent about ,000 to get a quality HD camera, hire a professional gaffer, grip, and location manager, and actors. They did not pay any tuition. And the dailies look incredible.

Myth #3: You Need Film School for Networking. Here is how I met Glynn, the very talented film director I mentioned earlier. I was in a Coffee Bean in Studio City in Los Angeles. I saw he had a photo of James Cameron on his laptop. I turned to him and said "So you like James Cameron?" That was it. We talked for about 2 hours and had a blast, and once I visited him on set I met about 15 more awesome people working in or around the business. In LA, if you talk to people and are nice, you will make connections. You do not need to take out a student loan to pay for that. And if you do not live in LA, you can use the internet.

Learn filmmaking the right way. Skip film school and start getting on pro film sets and making your own movies right away. http://www.filmschoolsecrets.com

Launching Your Independent Film Online

Launching Your Independent Film Online

Article by Anthony Mora

The traditional film production/distribution model is dramatically shifting, yet with change comes opportunity. As in the fields of music and publishing, the Internet has opened up new avenues to promote market and create a buzz for your film. Whereas traditional public relations is still a critically important aspect of any film marketing campaign, it's one tool in your overall marketing and promotion kit. PR includes reviews, interviews, and feature stories in print radio or TV. Now add to the mix online marketing, including blog postings, article marketing and creating a presence in the social media world.

Being covered in the media is important because it offers you and your film the credibility and validation of being featured in the news. It helps create a buzz and builds a reputation for you and your film. Media coverage also separates your film from the competition, which is incredibly important.

My one caveat here is to think long and hard before submitting your film to be reviewed by the major entertainment trade publications. Those reviewers are used to being courted by the major studios and reviewing multi-million dollar films. Not that some of them can't see beyond the budget constraints of a true independent and judge a film on its own merits, but it is a risk. As a small indie film without a name cast your chances of being reviewed without a distribution deal are slim, and not always that much better with distribution. Beyond that getting reviewed and possibly torn to shreds in one of the major trades can do you more harm than good. Distributors are seldom going to jump at the chance to carry a film that has been publicly humiliated. Shoot for features or stories about your film, or the filmmaking process. Check out my article on film PR for suggestions. Once you do get some media coverage, now go online and amplify it.

But don't wait for media coverage to start promoting your film. Create a cool, preferably interactive, website. Develop a presence on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and other social media sites. Don't just talk about your project. Post information that film enthusiasts will be interested in. Comment on other indie films. Start conversations. Focus on film sites, but also look at other possible markets that have to do with your film's topic. If your film is sci-fi oriented, search for blogs that cover that world. If your project is a western, target some sites that focus on the old west. You get the picture.

Search for blogs like Giant Robot, Ain't it Cool News, and Rotten Tomatoes. Find blogs that cover the type of film you've made, make a list of any and all film and entertainment sites and contact them. Don't try to cover all of the social media sites. You won't have the time, money, or energy to cover all of the blogs, forums or social media sites. Make a list of those sites and blogs that you feel are most in-line with your project and work those. You're better off concentrating on a few sites and building connections, than posting one or two items on hundreds and creating no relationships.

Think of the different ways you can create interest: humor, sex, controversy, fright - stuff that blows up - all of that sells. Use it. Don't focus on selling, but on creating interesting content. Since you're working in the film world, you have visuals, video clips that you can post. Use that to your advantage. When it comes to marketing your film work like the independent filmmaker you are, but think like a savvy marketer.
