BOTTOM LINE: Despite being more evenly handled as a film, and still very funny, "Bruno" is not as successfully funny as "Borat", and the way sequences are edited makes the proceedings feel more staged than what they actually are.
THE GOOD: Sacha Baron Cohen is at it again, this time with Bruno, a gay Austrian fashionista who wants to become super-famous. As with "Borat", Cohen unleashes this offensive stereotype on Americans who do not know any better, and quite often comes up with hilarious results. For example, Bruno wants to do a fashion shoot for himself with kids and his interviews with the mothers have to rank as downright embarrassing for those mothers as they basically agree for their babies to do anything he suggests. Bruno's attempt to become straight is hilariously realised when he visits a "gay converter", someone who specialises in turning gay people straight.
This God-fearing individual is prime fodder for Bruno, as is the obligatory "make fun of a crowd of red-necks scene" when he manages to turn a staged fight in a boxing ring in to a love-making session with his assistant. This last scene is so funny, particularly with the reactions of the red-necks, that Cohen could have made the whole film about it. As a piece, the film is better constructed and evenly-handled than "Borat", from the hilarious title sequence to the scripted sequences which link all the improvised sequences together. "Bruno" is a very funny film which manages to push the boundaries of comedy and the genre of the mockumentary in general.
THE BAD: Despite its very funny sequences, "Bruno" is not as funny as say the first half of "Borat", largely because the title character is not as funny in concept. Borat was an ignorant, dumb and innocent immigrant, whereas Bruno can be classed in the more arrogant, stuck-up and not-classy category. When Borat insulted people, he looked like he did not mean it. When Bruno insults people, you get the sense that he is in on it. This leads to another problem with the film; despite all of its improvised sequences which are quite obvious, the way the film is put together gives you the feeling that a lot of these scenes could have been staged even though they are not. The swingers party sequence for example feels half real (when Bruno is arguing with one of the men) and half staged (when Bruno is being assaulted by an aggressive female swinger in the bedroom). The talk show sequence feels completely staged. As a result, "Bruno" does not have that raw energy that helped make "Borat" such a success, even though "Bruno" is likely to be just as financially successful as "Borat".

American Film Schools cost anywhere from ,000 to ,000 a year. When famous alum like George Lucas and Martin Scorsese went, the industry was very different, and their programs did not cost even a fraction of this amount. As a graduate of NYU Film, I learned the hard way of the gross disconnect between what is taught there, and how little it prepares a graduate for either working in the industry or making feature films. With tuition that astronomically high, I want to help dispel 3 of the biggest myths about film school that most people still believe in until they attend and graduate.
Myth #1: Film schools have clout in the film industry. This is not Business School. Going to Harvard may get you a cushy job at Goldman Sachs. In the film industry, everybody works their way up from the bottom. Period. It does not matter if you went to NYU or USC. I recommend calling the Comar Agency. (I am unaffiliated with them). They are a staffing agency specializing in the Entertainment Industry. Call and ask them if a film degree makes you any better a candidate for a job than someone without that degree. And if not, then why not apply for a film job right now?
Myth #2: You need a film school to teach you how to make films. This weekend I checked out two movie shoots. One was a student film being shot at New York Film Academy. Here, each student is paying ,000 a year in tuition to shoot on a ,000 camera. Meanwhile, my friends Glynn and Frida shot their own 10 minute short by teaching themselves and spending time on film sets. They spent about ,000 to get a quality HD camera, hire a professional gaffer, grip, and location manager, and actors. They did not pay any tuition. And the dailies look incredible.
Myth #3: You Need Film School for Networking. Here is how I met Glynn, the very talented film director I mentioned earlier. I was in a Coffee Bean in Studio City in Los Angeles. I saw he had a photo of James Cameron on his laptop. I turned to him and said "So you like James Cameron?" That was it. We talked for about 2 hours and had a blast, and once I visited him on set I met about 15 more awesome people working in or around the business. In LA, if you talk to people and are nice, you will make connections. You do not need to take out a student loan to pay for that. And if you do not live in LA, you can use the internet.

The traditional film production/distribution model is dramatically shifting, yet with change comes opportunity. As in the fields of music and publishing, the Internet has opened up new avenues to promote market and create a buzz for your film. Whereas traditional public relations is still a critically important aspect of any film marketing campaign, it's one tool in your overall marketing and promotion kit. PR includes reviews, interviews, and feature stories in print radio or TV. Now add to the mix online marketing, including blog postings, article marketing and creating a presence in the social media world.
Being covered in the media is important because it offers you and your film the credibility and validation of being featured in the news. It helps create a buzz and builds a reputation for you and your film. Media coverage also separates your film from the competition, which is incredibly important.
My one caveat here is to think long and hard before submitting your film to be reviewed by the major entertainment trade publications. Those reviewers are used to being courted by the major studios and reviewing multi-million dollar films. Not that some of them can't see beyond the budget constraints of a true independent and judge a film on its own merits, but it is a risk. As a small indie film without a name cast your chances of being reviewed without a distribution deal are slim, and not always that much better with distribution. Beyond that getting reviewed and possibly torn to shreds in one of the major trades can do you more harm than good. Distributors are seldom going to jump at the chance to carry a film that has been publicly humiliated. Shoot for features or stories about your film, or the filmmaking process. Check out my article on film PR for suggestions. Once you do get some media coverage, now go online and amplify it.
But don't wait for media coverage to start promoting your film. Create a cool, preferably interactive, website. Develop a presence on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and other social media sites. Don't just talk about your project. Post information that film enthusiasts will be interested in. Comment on other indie films. Start conversations. Focus on film sites, but also look at other possible markets that have to do with your film's topic. If your film is sci-fi oriented, search for blogs that cover that world. If your project is a western, target some sites that focus on the old west. You get the picture.
Search for blogs like Giant Robot, Ain't it Cool News, and Rotten Tomatoes. Find blogs that cover the type of film you've made, make a list of any and all film and entertainment sites and contact them. Don't try to cover all of the social media sites. You won't have the time, money, or energy to cover all of the blogs, forums or social media sites. Make a list of those sites and blogs that you feel are most in-line with your project and work those. You're better off concentrating on a few sites and building connections, than posting one or two items on hundreds and creating no relationships.
Think of the different ways you can create interest: humor, sex, controversy, fright - stuff that blows up - all of that sells. Use it. Don't focus on selling, but on creating interesting content. Since you're working in the film world, you have visuals, video clips that you can post. Use that to your advantage. When it comes to marketing your film work like the independent filmmaker you are, but think like a savvy marketer.

I was not overly keen on watching this film as for some reason I thought it was going to be a scary one, fortunately hubby tales me into watching and I am pleased that I did as I really did enjoy the film. I have only given a very brief plot outline for the film so don't think it is as basic as I have said, there is a lot more to the story which will be discovered if you decided to give it a watch. I felt the storyline was very good and I loved how it was put across, I was slightly dubious when I found out it was about angels as I thought it would be a bit far fetched but I am pleased to say it was not. I found the whole use of God and the apocalypse was interested and I was actually told in an easy to follow and understand way.
The acting was very good, the lead role of Michael was played by Paul Bettany. He was very strong and played the role well. I felt I understood a lot about him even from the few facts we got to know about him. He showed great strength and courage which he managed to portray and get into the other characters. He was not what I was expecting an angel to look like, he had tattoos and seemed very at ease with the guns and fighting. I loved the different sides he showed and felt he was the perfect choice for the role. He worked well with the other characters and he seemed genuine when delivering his lines and showing his emotions. The role of Charlie was good and she was not a vulnerable girl as I thought she would be, I felt emotional towards her as she was fighting for a child she was not even willing to keep as she was having him adopted and I thought she got the powerfulness of this and her feelings across very well. She showed strength and courage and I did warm to her. We did have some other very good and strong actors in the film. Denis Quade played a very good role and he did bring a little humour to the start of the film with the way he treated his television and I also loved the role of his son, played by Lucas Black.
The film was set at an out of town diner and truck stop. I felt the setting was good as it meant we did not have a lot of different locations to worry about and wonder where we actually were all of the time. The way it came across was very remote and basic and I did enjoy this aspect. There was a lack of technology and high powered items which meant that the lifestyle was very slow paced. I felt this came across well and I loved seeing how they all had to change and toughen up when evil came. The desert surrounding the diner was lovely and we did get one or two nice scenery shots, that was at the start of the film before the action started. The costumes were all good and fitting for the film and so to were the props. We did have a lot of weapons in the film and they all looked good and real. I loved how they were taken on by the regular people and how they came to be at ease using them.
The film is packed full of special effects and I found them to all be of a very high standard. The gun fights all looked excellent and very real and some of the things the possessed people did looked gruesome and stomach turning. I thought a lot of time and effort had gone into producing these effects and it really did pay off as they all fitted effortlessly into the film. The music was also very good and we had quite a mixed soundtrack which I enjoyed. I did find the classical music worked slightly better as it helped with the drama and tension of the film.
The running time of the film is 1 hour and 36 minutes long and I felt this was a great length with the story moving at a good steady pace form start to finish. The rate is a 15 and I strongly agree with this. There is a lot of bloody and strong violence and bad language throughout. I would not recommend this film to younger viewers. The DVD can be bought for £5 in a variety of shops and I do think it is well worth this price tag.
I am more than happy to give this film a good solid 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the acting was also of a very high standard. I would have to say so of the scenes were overly gruesome but I think this helped me to understand the immensity of what was happening in the story. This film gets a high recommendations from both me and hubby.

Rodney makes his way to the big city but it is not an easy ride and along the way he meets Cappy, a run down robot who is always thinking of scams and making money. They strike up a friendship but soon leaves each other and head off for their own things. Rodney arrives at Bigwelds factory only to find the doors are shut and things are changing. Can Rodney meet his idol and become the famous inventor he has always dreamed of?
I must confess that both me and hubby have a strong liking for children's films as they make a refreshing change and are always so easy to watch, this one was no exception. The story for this film was great and I loved how they used robots instead of humans as it gave a new spin on things and more could be done with the characters. The way the story was put across made it very easy to follow especially for younger viewers.
The animation was excellent throughout the film. The robots all looked good and all very different. They were all of different sizes and shapes and for me this was a good thing as it portrayed the fact that all colours and shapes could live together in peace and not be picked on for being different. They were all very well detailed, right down to the facial features and the way they walked and talked and for me it was the detail which really bought them to life. The scenery and sets which were created were all very good and nice and bright so easy to look at and help keep the attention of children. I found the way t
E city was show to be very good and very similar to out human cities. There were a few things which were different and one of the things included the transport they had. I just loved the ride Rodney had when he arrived in the city and thought a lot of work had gone into the making of these scenes. The details were all very good and for me at times I did actually forget that I was watching an animated film.
The characters were all very good, the lead one of Rodney was great and easy to get to know and understand, we got a brief look at his childhood and what he was like growing up and I think this did help us to get to better understanding of him. He appearance was good and he did look friendly. The vocals he had were given by Ewan McGregor and I think he managed to really bring emotion and expression to the animated character by the way he spoke and the elaborations he gave to the way he said and phrased things. Another good character was Bigweld, he looked funny and was a big characters, he was voiced by Mel Brooks and he managed to put a lot of humour into the film with the fun and loud voice he gave to him. Other vocals came from actors, Helle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Drew Carey, Paul Giamatti and Greg Kinnear.
As with most films there are some baddies in this one, they are not scary though, the appearance of them is nothing which may scare young children but I would advise that towards the end of the film there are a few scenes which show mild peril so you may want to distract them slightly on these parts. There really is nothing for children over the age of 5 to worry about in this film and I think they will thoroughly enjoy it and find it quite funny. There is quite a lot of humour in the film and it is not all solely for the children, there were a few small gags which both me and hubby thought were great so I think they have gone for both the young and adult market with this side of the film. There are one or two characters which do make the film very fun to watch and for me it was mainly Cappy who gave us the laughs.
The music in the film was great and suited it very well. It was mainly light and easy to listen to and I do think it helped with the telling of the story and the emotions and slightly drama of what was happening.
I am only reviewing the film so there are no bonus features to speak about. The running time of the film is 91 minutes and I found that the story moved at a good pace from start to finish so it should manage to keep the attention of young viewers, the rate is a U and I do fully agree with this. The film can be bought on DVD for less than £5 now and I do think this is great value for money.
I have no problems in giving this film the full 5 stars. It was enjoyable and entertaining to watch and it is one the whole family can sit down and share together.

Impersonating films stars is not as easy as it may seem. First of all, one must at least vaguely look the part and then must incorporate the moves as well. It is quite easy to simply say memorable lines from films but, acting the part is another thing completely.However for example, it's relatively easy to say, "make my day" from the Dirty Harry series. However, can one say it with only the same conviction that Clint Eastwood does? That is exactly what separates the good impersonators from the bad impersonators.
They say that mockery is one of the sources of all admiration and one specific gentleman that devoted his life to this was famous in his own part. Rich Little was very famous simply for impersonating film stars with surprising accuracy. In fact, he had a show on the Las Vegas strip devoted entirely to the art of impersonation as well as improvisation and it was a wide success.
He would impersonate many different people from actors to politicians with seemingly the greatest of ease.
Many times, it is just the moves or routines that is the only thing that needs to be acted out as with much of the slapstick comedy of days gone by. Everyone is familiar with it and can therefore, appreciate it. But, what about the poor soul who simply looks uncannily similar to a well known star but, is otherwise normal. They may be the source of some unwanted and mistaken attention from time to time.

Film Maker Sriram Raghavan Film-maker Sriram Raghavan has managed to earn a cult following through his two remarkable Bollywood suspense thrillers EK HASINA THI (2004) and JOHNNY GADDAAR (2007).
Early Life
As a kid, Sriram used to beg, borrow and steal to watch movies, particularly of film-makers like Manmohan Desai, Nasir Hussain, Vijay Anand and Alfred Hitchcock, and munched on a lot of James Headly Chase novels along; his popcorn. Suspense thriller was his genre and to-be-forte.
Sriram, a Tamilian originally from Pune, finished college and came to Mumbai to pursue a career in journalism. He got a job in Stardust magazine, but he wasn't good at it. So he decided to join the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune for a course in direction.
Later, he made a 45-minute gripping documentary, 'Raman Raghav', on the most infamous Indian serial killer, Raman Raghav. It starred noted stage-film actor Raghuvir Yadav in the lead.
Sriram happened to meet director Ram Gopal Varma after the release of SATYA (1998). Varma asked him to write something and show him. Sriram carried the VHS of 'Raman Raghav' and showed him. Varma loved Sriram's documentary and soon decided to offer him a script.
Ram Gopal Varma showed the script of Ek Hasina Thi by Pooja Ladha Surti to Sriram. The script had a woman as the protagonist which Sriram found very exciting. And, hence agreed to direct it.
Career
Sriram debuted with EK HASINA THI in the year 2004. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Urmila Matondkar in the lead, the film was a dark-yet-not-grim psychological thriller, which was co-written by Sriram and produced by Ram Gopal Varma. Ek Hasina Thi stunned the audiences with its amazing storyline and brilliant direction. Urmila's performance earned her a Filmfare nomination for the Best Actress. The film received rave reviews from critics and has become a cult film among thriller lovers.
His next directorial was JOHNNY GADDAAR (2007). It's story revolved around a gang of five men, the eldest (Dharmendra) over 60, the youngest (Neil Nitin Mukesh, his debut) in his twenties, who faced the bright prospect of making a fortune through what seemed to be a simple exchange of contraband for money on a train. However, this caper goes wrong badly. What follows is a ruthless search for the traitor amongst them. The film, upon release, underperformed at the ticket window, but it was one of the most positively reviewed films of the year. It was applauded for its soundtrack, camerawork and editing. The film gained immense following for its 60s-70s style thriller-film noir. With this film, Sriram Raghavan had become amongst the most reputed film-makers to work with.

But most people don't realize that the actual filmmaking exercises done in these schools are very primitive and can be replicated very simply. NYU's "Sight and Sound: Film" course, a 2nd year Fundamentals Course costs about ,000 in tuition. New York Film Academy's year long filmmaking program costs about ,000.
In each of these courses, students make about 5 to 6 black and white reversal 16mm films. These are the kinds of movies you expect to see in a film school. Black and white, no sound. As a learning exercise, these movies actual do more damage than good because the techniques used are so out of sync with how things are actually done on a real movie set. Certainly, one need not spend this much in tuition to make movies like these to work with this level of equipment.
The camera used by these schools is the ArriFlex-S. This camera was invented in 1952. It became very popular in the 1960s, the heyday of 16mm film news shooting. However, nobody in the film business uses this camera anymore: except for film students. The camera is "non sync" meaning that you cannot shoot characters speaking dialogue; the film will not keep the same rate as the recording tape and the dialog starts to go out of sync with the mouths of the actors as they move.

It's so simple. Basically, the brighter it is outside, the narrower the f stop needs to be. If it's really dark, then the f stop has to be completely open. The light meter does it all for you.

Professional and amateur photographers have used photographic film for over one hundred years. Although digital picture taking has become vastly popular, developing film is still the best method for capturing photos. This type of film can record minute details and retain the purity of the image.
Photographic film has properties that make it light sensitive. When a picture is taken with a camera containing film, only a certain amount of light reaches it. Taking the picture freezes the image being photographed and records it. The shutter on the camera opens at varying speeds to allow specific amounts of light in. The light chemically changes the properties of the film.
The image that is recorded on the film is invisible at the time of capture. When it's developed, it pulls the image into view. The film is kept in a dark place until it is time to be developed. The outer casing protects it from any exposure to light. Keeping the film inside the case until it is time to develop the picture is essential. Exposing the film to light too soon will negatively impact the image. Once it is ready to be developed, it can be made larger and turned into a print.
Developing film involves removing it in a dark room. The surface of the film is covered by an emulsion of materials that react to light energy. Working in a dark room allows the photographer to develop the image without any light reaching the film. When the film is exposed, the image appears as a negative. This means that the picture is seen in a brightness that is opposite the actual image. The areas on an image that receive the lightest exposure appear dark on the negative. Developing the film turns the negative image into a positive one, so human eyes can view it. During it's development, a solution is used to stabilize it. Stabilizing the film makes the image visible. Once the image is in view, the solution is rinsed off, and the film is placed in a fixing bath. This is a combination of chemicals that react with the compounds leftover on it. Color film has several emulsions, and each one is sensitive to a different color of light. This makes it possible to print color pictures that maintain the original colors on the photographed image. At the beginning of the film she's just fleeced one employer, Strutt, changed her appearance and name, and then applies for a job with another employer, little knowing the connection it has with Strutt. She's accepted by Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) at the firm and starts work as a typist but in a short while she's gone and pilfered money from the company safe. Rutland quickly discovers the theft and, intrigued by her nature, forces Marnie to marry him. He discovers she has various psychological issues and determines to find out the cause of them so that she can be healed and become a normal human being.
The movie looks unreal and several scenes, in particular the horse-riding scenes, seem bizarre and old-fashioned but it's all meant to reflect Marnie's disturbed point of view and experience of the world around her. She is more at ease with animals and especially with horses (always a handy symbol of sexuality: in Marnie's case the love of horses might indicate a sexual immaturity) than with humans, particularly men whom she fears and will not allow to touch her. Episodes in which she experiences flashback memories with their resulting traumas whenever she sees blood or bright red colours are highlighted with red filters over the camera lens, a ploy carried over from "Vertigo" where filters of several colours were used in the psychedelic dream sequence. The role is a complicated one and Hedren carries it off as best she can: she often goes blank in scenes where other actors might over-act and contort their faces in extreme emotion but then it's hard to predict how disturbed individuals might react in situations that cause anxiety to them. Her icy silvery-blonde looks at least are ideal for the role: she seems a vulnerable child-woman whose normal development has been stymied by trauma, repressed memory and a neglectful mother (Louise Latham) who has little understanding of her daughter's needs.
The other significant role of Mark Rutland is played well by Connery who combines charisma and charm with a controlling and predatory nature. His motive for wanting to protect and at the same time train Marnie to become a "normal" functioning human is never clear and it seems he has a clinical if creepy scientific interest in changing and controlling her. He may be an investigator with an interest in animal psychology, having studied zoology, but then not all such students would apply their learning to manipulate humans! He is dead keen on finding the source of Marnie's kleptomania, sexual frigidity and phobias and how he finds out through his contacts in Philadelphia and Baltimore about a past murder case and puts two and two together to get an answer beyond four appears rather too easy to be realistic. There is a parallel with Hitchcock's earlier movie "Vertigo" in which a detective makes over a young woman into his ideal love object: the control over Marnie is more subtle and looks far less sinister than that movie and though it's arguable that Marnie must some day face her fears and seek help, the way she's forced to confront her past by Mark and the methods he uses can be just abusive as the detective Scotty's control of the young woman Judy. Perhaps Mark is attracted to Marnie precisely because her disorders make her the intelligent, intriguing and headstrong individual she is. The irony for Marnie is that she'll be no different from other "normal" women (read dutiful Stepford-wife types) once she is "cured" of her disorders and Mark will get bored with her and cast her aside for another flawed woman to study and manipulate.
Of the minor characters, Mark's sister-in-law Lil (Diane Baker) hasn't much to do besides smoulder with what looks like desire for or resentment at Marnie – there's possibly a hint of unacknowledged lesbian-ish desire there – and invite the Strutts for dinner behind Mark and Marnie's backs for who knows what reason. What Lil happens to be doing at her father-in-law's home with her husband well out of the picture (literally) is never made clear though Dad and Mark don't mind having her around. What the whole family is doing living together, Dad, two brothers and their presumed spouses, isn't clear though the house has plenty of room for them all and a whole batch of guests for a fox-hunting weekend.
The Freudian psychology covered in the movie looks simplistic and is applied in a way that explains everything about Marnie's disturbed inner world very glibly. A diagnosis that would take a trained psychoanalyst several years to reach and several hundred or a couple thousand dollars each year to be coughed up by the patient takes several minutes for an amateur sleuth to work out with the help of a few textbooks and a visit to the patient's mum, no fee charged. Perhaps that says something about Hitchcock's opinion of psychoanalysis in particular and psychiatry generally! Marnie's association with horses and what that implies about her nature, desire for freedom and individuality, and her sexuality is laboured over and over throughout the film. The scene in which Marnie is forced to shoot a horse becomes all the more shocking and tragic because in essence she is giving up her freedom.
As well as the emphasis on Freudian psychology and the subject of men's control over women under the appearance of romantic love and attachment, familiar Hitchcock themes include the fragility and fluidity of identity (Marnie takes on and drops several identities at will); deception in the form of thievery, sexual blackmail, identity fraud; the portrayal of sexuality by symbolic means (in this movie, through horses); the association of sex with violence and bloodshed; and the influence of a mother on her child's psyche. As in "North by Northwest" and "Psycho", romantic attraction and sex become a business transaction: Mark blackmails Marnie into marriage on the threat of turning her over to the police.
Technically the film is very well done with a lavish and colourful style, a musical soundtrack that is romantic and sometimes very annoyingly intrusive and Hitchcock's typical filming methods and tricks which include the voyeuristic camera sneaking on Marnie as she searches for Mark's safe near the film's end and a completely silent scene of Marnie on one side of the camera's view stealing money from her new employer while on the other side of the camera's view the cleaner is mopping the floor. (The humour behind this scene is that the cleaner is deaf, hence the complete silence.) The main flaw though is that several scenes are very long and the editing throughout the film could have been tightened up much more, chopping at least 15 minutes off the film's 2-hour running-time. Filming techniques that were innovative and fresh when used in films like "Vertigo" and "North by Northwest" now seem repetitive, awkward and heavy-handed.
In its ideas and style, "Marnie" is a rehash of "Vertigo" which was a better film technically. "Marnie" may be a subtler creation with respect to theme but in other respects it repeats some of Hitchcock's themes, ideas and motifs from "Vertigo", "North by Northwest" and "Psycho" in a ham-fisted way. If only it weren't so long and repetitive, "Marnie" might have been a great film: the acting performances are very good if not great and the sets are colourful and hyper-real. The world in which Marnie and Mark move is a place of glamour, wealth and privilege where money can buy freedom, keep people away from police and solve problems.

More than 2,350 years ago, in the heart of the wilderness, surrounded by nature's splendors, a dramatic encounter which will go down in the annals of history unfolded. Two characters received precedence at this meet. One was Ven. Arahant Mahinda Thera, son of Emperor Asoka, and the other was the reigning king of Sri Lanka, King Devanampiyatissa.
Ven. Arahant Mahinda Thera was on a sacred mission to spread the teachings of the Buddha. However such precepts cannot be handed over in one go. The monarch's intellectual stature was graded after a quiz. He withstood the test. The island prospered by embracing Buddhism.
Bringing this significant moment of spiritual awakening to mind thousands of Buddhists visit Mihintale, the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, each year on Poson Poya day. This milestone in the history will be rekindled when director Sanath Abeysekara begins shoot on his much talked about movie Mahindagamanaya. The Muhurath ceremony of the event took place at Gangaramaya temple last week. Ven. Pallagama Hemarathana Thera, Ven. Galabada Thera, Ven. Agalakada Sirisumana Thera and Ven. Magalle Nabitha Thera took part in the event which evoked blessings for the project.

The film is part of the project aimed at celebrating the 2600th Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi in 2011. It aims to send the message of the compassionate nature of Buddhism across to the world.
Speaking at the event, director Abeysekara said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Buddhist Affairs Ministry have been very keen on the film. He added that he had worked on the script for nearly a year and had done a lot of background research to include accurate details to the story.
"The opening chapters of the movie include a few scenes of Emperor Asoka. We will be flying to India in January to shoot these episodes. We are constructing the monuments of places and other buildings and working on the costumes. These have to be done with care so that modern elements do not emerge in the pictures.
Even the characters acted and talked in a specific manner. We hope to give the full experience of travelling back in time for the audience," Abeysekara noted. He also said that he had to undergo several threats and criticism when he took up the challenge of making the movie.
"Some questioned why a young and less experienced filmmaker should take on such a colossal project but I withstood my ground. Shooting is scheduled for November and December in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Vavuniya," he said. He also added that one focal point of the tale is the moment when Queen Anula and Prince Aritta renunciate from lay life and enter the Order of Sangha. This will be done in a realistic manner; Abeysekara stressed while pointing out that it was only after Buddhism took over the isle that the locals were gifted with rich literary work.
Producer of Mahindagamanaya, Daminda Upali Fernando of Best Life Cinema said that one of the main reasons which motivated him to produce the movie is the fact that the director's self confidence and dedication.
He added that the movie will be made as an act of social hospitality service rather than a tool for profit making.
Mahindagamanaya, the arrival of Arahat Mahinda in Sri Lanka with the noblest gift of Buddhism changed the country's history and laid the foundation for a civilization based on Buddhism.
Although the story is well-known and commemorated every year on Poson Poya Day, there have not been many attempts to portray it artistically, through film or television. Who in Sri Lanka, regardless of his or her religion, does not know about the meeting between Arahat Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa, who was hunting deer when the Great Arahat called him from atop the Mihintale rock?
This artistic lacuna is about to be filled, as several leading film personalities are making a film which depicts the advent of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Although the film is based on Mahindagamanaya, it is also an attempt to explore the norms and values of Buddhism. It will be a film for all Sri Lankans, not only Buddhists.
Shooting on "Mahindagamanaya" commenced in the precincts of historic Tanthirimale Raja Maha Vihara precincts in Anuradhapura District last week. According to the Director 75 per cent of the shooting of "Mahindagamanaya" has been completed so far.
This is the maiden directorial effort of Sanath Abeysekara, who has 32 teledramas to his credit. The idea of making a film on this great event in the country's history came to him when he was reading the Mahavamsa. He has remained faithful to the Mahavamsa account when making this movie. According to the Director the film "Mahindagamanaya" will highlight the advent of Arahat Mahinda Thera to Sri Lanka and the social, cultural, religious and economic developments that occurred in our country afterwards. The film will depict the period 2250-2010 BC.
After King Devanampiyatissa ascended to the throne King Asoka of India, himself a warrior King who embraced Buddhism and became non-violent, sent Arahat Mahinda Thera to Sri Lanka to preach Buddhism. Although various beliefs existed in Sri Lanka even at that time, the concept of a religion was unheard of.
After the advent of Ven. Arahat Mahinda Thera to Sri Lanka, people who venerated trees and devils started to embrace Buddhism to correct their path and lead a peaceful life. Buddhism laid the foundation for a vibrant society that valued the Buddha Dhamma.
It paved the way for the creation of an Order of the Maha Sangha, who guided the people on moral uplift. The film Mahindagamanaya will depict this transformation.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has taken a keen interest in the film and instructed the relevant authorities to make funds available for the film. Veteran film star Jeevan Kumaratunga plays the role of King Devanampiyatissa and veteran actress Dilhani Ekanayake is playing the main female role Anuladevi.
Kumaratunga, who is Posts Minister, told the Sunday Observer that although he has played many roles in his cinematic career, this is the first time he is playing such a pivotal historical role. This will be especially significant as next year marks the 2600th Sambuddha Jayanthi. The film too will be released next year.
Roshan Pilapitiya who plays the role of Maha Aritta Kumara in "Mahindagamanaya" is also very happy to play such a character in a historical film. Maha Aritta Kumara was the first Sri Lankan who was ordained as a Bhikku in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
Dilhani Ekanayake who is playing the role Queen Anuladevi said that this is a new experience for her. She is keen to try out ancient dresses and to visit ancient historic places. She described her character as a tough one. Roshan Pilapitiya, Roshan Ranawana, Oshaoli Hewamadduma, Chinthaka Kulathunga, Dulika Marapana, G. R. Perera, Sarath Dikkumbura, Hemasiri Liyanage, Jayani Senanayake, Kumara Thirimadura, Palitha Nanayakkara, Gnananga Gunawardane and several other actors will be featured in "Mahindagamanaya".
The film is being produced by Best Life Films. Music is by Rohana Weerasinghe. The Art Director is Sunil Wijeratne. The Costumes are designed by Heenatigala Premadasa, while cinematography is handled by Chamara Dammika Ratnayake and Channa Deshapriya.
The Assistant Director is Jayantha Bopitiya. Kulasiri Budawatta is the choreographer. Dialogues have been written by Puravidya Chakravarthi Ven. Ellawala Medanandha Thera. The playback songs are performed by Uresha Ravihari, Karunaratne Divulgane, Sunil Edirisinghe, Nanda Malani and Amarasiri Pieris.
The lyrics are by Ven. Pallegama Hemaratana Thera, Ven. Ellawala Medananda Thera, Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne and Sanath Abeysekara.
The film will also be released internationally, especially in countries with large Buddhist populations.
